One challenge with oral vitamin C supplementation in horses is bioavailability. The equine gut doesn't absorb large single doses of ascorbic acid particularly efficiently. Research suggests that absorption decreases as dose size increases, meaning much of a large single dose may pass through unabsorbed.

Can You Give Too Much Vitamin C?

Vitamin C can regenerate oxidised vitamin E back to its active form, effectively recycling it. This means that adequate vitamin C levels help your horse get more mileage from its vitamin E — particularly important for horses that are already receiving vitamin E supplementation for conditions like muscle disorders or neurological concerns.

Practical Tips for Supplementing Vitamin C

  1. Start with a clear reason. Don't supplement "just in case." Identify whether your horse falls into one of the categories that genuinely benefits.
  2. Use a buffered form like sodium ascorbate for better palatability and gastric tolerance.
  3. Split the dose between meals for improved absorption.
  4. Store it properly. Vitamin C degrades when exposed to heat, light, and moisture. Keep supplements in a cool, dry, dark place and seal containers tightly.
  5. Check for redundancy. Your horse's existing feed or supplements may already contain vitamin C. Review the full diet before adding more.
  6. Be consistent. For chronic conditions, daily supplementation is more effective than sporadic dosing.
  7. Taper off rather than stopping abruptly after prolonged use.
