While the basic principles of equine nutrition apply to every horse, the demands placed on a hard-working horse change almost every aspect of what, when, and how much they need to eat.

If you're riding regularly, competing, or working your horse in any demanding discipline — whether that's racing, endurance, dressage, polo, or heavy stock work — understanding these differences isn't optional. It's the key to keeping your horse healthy, sound, and performing at their best.

Let's break down exactly why hard-working horses have different nutritional needs, and what you should do about it.

What Counts as a "Hard-Working" Horse?

Before we dive in, it helps to understand how workload is typically classified. Equine nutritionists generally divide work into four categories:

  • Light work — Recreational riding, light hacking, or basic schooling a few times a week
  • Moderate work — Regular schooling, low-level competition, or frequent trail riding
  • Hard work — Regular competition (eventing, show jumping, dressage at higher levels), race training, polo, or stock work
  • Very hard work — Elite racing, three-day eventing at advanced levels, endurance rides over 80km

The jump from moderate to hard work is where nutritional needs change most dramatically. A horse in hard work can require 70–100% more energy than the same horse at maintenance. That's not a small increase — it fundamentally changes the feeding plan.

Energy: The Single Biggest Change

Why Energy Demand Skyrockets

Energy is measured in megajoules (MJ) of digestible energy (DE). A 500kg horse at maintenance might need around 70–75 MJ DE per day. That same horse in hard work may need 120–140 MJ DE per day — nearly double.

This energy is needed for:

  • Muscle contraction during exercise
  • Thermoregulation — hard-working horses generate significant body heat
  • Recovery and repair of muscle tissue after strenuous exercise
  • Increased heart rate and respiration during and after work

Where the Extra Energy Comes From

You can't just double the amount of hay and expect results. Forage alone typically can't provide enough calorie-dense energy for a horse in hard work without exceeding the gut's physical capacity.

This is why hard-working horses are fed concentrated energy sources such as:

  • Cereal grains (oats, barley, maize) — provide starch, which is rapidly converted to glucose for fast energy
  • Oils and fats (vegetable oil, rice bran oil, linseed) — provide slow-release, calorie-dense energy at 2.25 times the energy per gram compared to carbohydrates
  • Super fibres (beet pulp, soy hulls) — fermented in the hindgut for sustained energy without the starch-related risks

The ideal approach for most hard-working horses is a combination of all three, keeping starch levels manageable (ideally under 1g of starch per kg of bodyweight per meal) to reduce the risk of hindgut acidosis, colic, and excitable behaviour.

Protein: Building and Repairing Muscle

Hard-working horses don't just need more protein — they need better quality protein. Exercise causes micro-damage to muscle fibres, and the repair process is what builds strength and condition. This repair requires amino acids, the building blocks of protein.

The key amino acids to focus on are:

  • Lysine — the most commonly limiting amino acid in equine diets
  • Threonine — the second limiting amino acid
  • Methionine — important for muscle and hoof health

A horse in hard work typically needs around 1,000–1,100g of crude protein per day (compared to roughly 630g at maintenance for a 500kg horse). But crude protein numbers alone don't tell the whole story — the amino acid profile matters enormously.

Good quality protein sources for working horses include lucerne (alfalfa), soybean meal, lupins, and full-fat soybeans.

Electrolytes: What Sweat Takes Away

This is one of the most underestimated nutritional differences between a resting horse and a hard-working one.

Horses are prolific sweaters. A horse in hard work can lose 10–15 litres of sweat per hour in hot conditions. Horse sweat is hypertonic, meaning it contains higher concentrations of electrolytes than blood plasma. This is the opposite of human sweat.

The electrolytes lost in significant quantities include:

  • Sodium (Na)
  • Chloride (Cl)
  • Potassium (K)
  • Calcium (Ca)
  • Magnesium (Mg)

Why This Matters So Much

Electrolyte losses can cause:

  • Fatigue and reduced performance
  • Muscle cramping and tying-up (exertional rhabdomyolysis)
  • Reduced thirst response (the horse doesn't realise it's dehydrated)
  • Synchronous diaphragmatic flutter ("thumps")
  • In severe cases, metabolic collapse

A plain salt block in the paddock is not enough for a hard-working horse. Most horses don't lick blocks aggressively enough to replace exercise losses. Instead, you should:

  • Add loose salt (sodium chloride) to feeds daily — typically 2–4 tablespoons for a horse in hard work
  • Provide a commercial electrolyte supplement on heavy sweat days, particularly one that matches the profile of equine sweat
  • Always ensure access to fresh, clean water

Vitamins and Minerals: Increased Demands Across the Board

Exercise increases the metabolic rate, which increases the turnover and requirement for many micronutrients.

This is exactly why analysing your horse's diet is so valuable — it reveals whether your current feeding plan actually meets the increased demands of your horse's workload.

Fibre: Still the Foundation

Here's a critical point that sometimes gets lost when people focus on high-energy feeds: forage must remain the foundation of every horse's diet, regardless of workload.

A horse in hard work still needs a minimum of 1.5% of bodyweight in forage per day — that's 7.5kg of dry matter for a 500kg horse. Ideally, aim for closer to 2%.

Why? Because:

  • Fibre fermentation in the hindgut provides a slow, steady energy source
  • Fibre holds water and electrolytes in the hindgut, acting as a fluid reservoir during exercise
  • Adequate fibre intake prevents gastric ulcers by buffering stomach acid (a major concern for hard-working horses)
  • A healthy hindgut microbiome depends on consistent fibre intake

Reducing forage to "make room" for grain is one of the most common and damaging mistakes in feeding performance horses. If your horse can't eat enough forage, consider calorie-dense forages like lucerne or high-quality haylage, and use oil-based energy sources that take up less gut space than grain.

Gastric Ulcer Risk: A Nutritional Consequence of Hard Work

Studies suggest that up to 90% of racehorses and 60–70% of sport horses in hard work have gastric ulcers. This is partly due to the physical mechanics of exercise (gastric acid splashes onto the unprotected upper stomach) and partly due to how these horses are commonly fed.

Nutritional strategies to reduce ulcer risk include:

  • Feeding forage before exercise — even a small haynet 30 minutes before work creates a fibrous mat that reduces acid splash
  • Avoiding large grain meals
  • Including lucerne in the diet — the calcium and protein content buffer stomach acid
  • Providing continuous access to forage wherever possible
  • Reducing the use of high-starch feeds in favour of oil and super fibre energy sources

Feeding Timing and Meal Structure

Hard-working horses often need more total feed, but how you deliver that feed matters as much as what's in it.

  • Split concentrate feeds into 3 or more small meals rather than 2 large ones. The horse's stomach is small (only 8–15 litres), and overloading it causes starch to bypass into the hindgut
  • Feed the largest forage portion at night, when the horse has the longest uninterrupted period to eat
  • Allow at least 1 hour after a grain meal before exercise, and ideally 2–3 hours
  • Offer forage as soon as possible after exercise, once the horse has cooled down and had a small drink
  • Provide electrolytes after exercise, not before — giving electrolytes before work on an empty stomach can cause gastric irritation

Recovery Nutrition

Just like human athletes, horses benefit from strategic post-exercise nutrition. After hard work:

  • Water first — offer small, frequent drinks as the horse cools
  • Electrolytes — to replace sweat losses and stimulate drinking
  • Forage — to begin replenishing hindgut fluid reserves and provide slow-release energy
  • A small concentrate meal within 1–2 hours — to begin replenishing muscle glycogen stores

Research shows that muscle glycogen replenishment in horses is much slower than in humans — it can take 48–72 hours to fully restore glycogen after a depleting bout of exercise. This has implications for competition schedules and training plans.

Body Condition: The Ultimate Feedback Tool

All the calculations and recommendations in the world are only starting points. The real measure of whether your feeding plan is working is your horse's body condition.

A hard-working horse should ideally sit at a body condition score of 4.5–5.5 out of 9 (on the Henneke scale). You should be able to feel ribs easily without pressing hard, but not see them prominently.

Monitor condition regularly — every 2 weeks is ideal — and adjust feed quantities accordingly. Weight tapes can help track trends, even if the absolute number isn't perfectly accurate.

Putting It All Together

Feeding a hard-working horse well isn't about simply adding more feed to the bucket. It requires a thoughtful, balanced approach that accounts for:

  • Dramatically increased energy needs
  • Higher quality and quantity of protein
  • Significant electrolyte replacement
  • Increased vitamin and mineral demands
  • Maintained (or increased) forage intake
  • Strategic meal timing and structure
  • Proactive gastric health management

Every horse is an individual, and workload, breed, temperament, sweat rate, and metabolism all influence the specifics. What works perfectly for one horse in hard work may be completely wrong for another.
