Every farrier will tell you the same thing: you can't shoe your way out of a bad diet. No matter how skilled the hoof care professional, if your horse isn't getting the right nutrients, hoof quality will suffer. Cracks, chips, crumbling horn, slow growth, and soft soles are often signs that something is missing — or imbalanced — in the diet.

The old saying "no hoof, no horse" has survived for centuries because it's true. And while genetics, environment, and farriery all play their part, nutrition is arguably the single most controllable factor when it comes to hoof health.

In this article, we'll look at exactly how nutrition affects hoof quality and growth rate, which nutrients matter most, common dietary mistakes, and practical steps you can take to grow stronger hooves from the inside out.

Understanding How the Hoof Grows

Before we talk about specific nutrients, it helps to understand what the hoof actually is and how it grows.

The hoof wall is made primarily of keratin — a tough, fibrous structural protein. This keratin is produced by living cells in the coronary band, which sits at the top of the hoof where it meets the skin. Think of the coronary band as the "factory" that produces hoof horn. As new cells are generated, older cells are pushed downward, hardening as they go. This is why nutritional changes take time to show results — you're essentially waiting for the new, better-quality horn to grow down.

The average horse hoof grows approximately 6–10mm per month, meaning it takes roughly 9–12 months for a completely new hoof wall to grow from the coronary band to the ground. The Key Nutrients for Hoof Quality

Hoof growth and quality depend on a surprisingly wide range of nutrients working together. Deficiency — or excess — in any one of them can cause problems.

Biotin (Vitamin B7)

Biotin is the most well-researched nutrient in relation to hoof quality. Multiple studies have demonstrated that supplementing biotin at 15–20mg per day for an average 500kg horse can improve hoof wall integrity, reduce cracking, and increase growth rate.

Biotin supports the production of keratin and the intercellular cement that holds hoof horn tubules together. Horses with poor-quality hooves often show measurable improvements after 6–9 months of consistent biotin supplementation.

However, biotin alone is rarely enough. It works best when combined with other essential nutrients — particularly zinc, methionine, and quality protein.

Zinc

Zinc is a trace mineral that plays a critical role in cell division, protein synthesis, and keratin formation. It is essential for the enzymes involved in building strong hoof horn.

Many UK and European pastures and forages are marginally deficient in zinc, and high iron levels in water and soil can further reduce zinc absorption. Relying on a Hoof Supplement Alone

A hoof supplement can be helpful, but it's not a substitute for a balanced overall diet. If the base diet is deficient in protein, calories, or major minerals, a small scoop of biotin and zinc won't fix the problem. The foundation must be right first.

Overfeeding Iron

Excessive iron is extremely common in equine diets, particularly for horses on pasture with iron-rich soil or bore-hole water. High iron interferes with the absorption of both zinc and copper — two of the most critical hoof minerals. You can be feeding adequate zinc on paper and still have a functional deficiency because iron is blocking uptake.

Undersupplying Protein

Hooves are made of protein. Horses fed low-quality forage with no additional protein source may simply not have the raw materials to build strong hoof horn. This is especially common in older horses, poor doers, and those on restricted diets.

Not Accounting for Forage Variability

Two bales of hay that look identical can have vastly different mineral profiles. Without testing your forage or at least analysing your horse's overall diet, you're essentially guessing. And guessing often leads to imbalances.

Sudden Dietary Changes

Dramatic swings in diet — particularly sugar and starch intake — can disrupt blood flow to the hoof and, in extreme cases, trigger laminitis. Consistency matters for hoof health.

The Sugar and Starch Factor

It's impossible to discuss nutrition and hoof health without mentioning sugar and starch. Diets high in non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) — from lush pasture, cereal grains, or molassed feeds — can cause metabolic disturbances that directly damage the hoof.

In horses with Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) or insulin dysregulation, high sugar and starch intake can compromise blood flow to the laminae, leading to subclinical or overt laminitis. Even in horses without a diagnosed metabolic condition, excessive NSC can cause inflammation that subtly undermines hoof quality over time.

For horses with recurring hoof problems, keeping the diet low in sugar and starch — below 10% NSC in the total diet — is often recommended.

How to Build a Hoof-Friendly Diet

Here's a practical, step-by-step approach to feeding for better hooves:

Step 1: Get the Forage Right

Forage should make up the foundation of every horse's diet — at least 1.5–2% of body weight per day in dry matter. Choose the best quality forage you can access. If your horse has metabolic issues, consider soaking hay to reduce sugar content.

Step 2: Ensure Adequate Protein

Make sure the diet provides enough quality protein, particularly the amino acids lysine and methionine. Good sources include soya bean meal, linseed, and alfalfa.

Step 3: Balance the Minerals

This is where most diets fall short. Key targets for a 500kg horse include:

  • Zinc: 400–600mg/day
  • Copper: 100–150mg/day
  • Biotin: 15–20mg/day (if hooves need extra support)
  • Selenium: 1–3mg/day (region-dependent)

A quality vitamin and mineral balancer, matched to your forage type, is usually the most efficient way to achieve this.

Step 4: Add Omega-3s

A tablespoon or two of ground linseed or a linseed oil supplement provides omega-3 fatty acids that support hoof moisture and flexibility.

When Nutrition Isn't the Problem

While nutrition is a major factor, it's not the only one. If you've optimised the diet and hooves still aren't improving, consider:

  • Farriery: Is the trim or shoeing cycle appropriate? Is the hoof balanced?
  • Environment: Constant wet-dry cycles can destroy hoof quality regardless of diet. Muddy paddocks and urine-soaked bedding are particularly damaging.
  • Genetics: Some breeds and individual horses simply grow better hoof than others. Nutrition can maximise genetic potential, but it can't override it entirely.
  • Underlying health conditions: Cushing's disease (PPID), metabolic syndrome, and chronic inflammation can all impair hoof quality.
