More useful markers include:
- Serum ferritin — this protein reflects iron storage levels and is a better indicator of chronic overload, though equine-specific assays are not yet widely available in the UK
- Liver biopsy — the gold standard for assessing iron storage, but invasive and rarely performed outside of research settings

Ratios matter just as much as absolute amounts — you want to see copper and zinc at levels that can compete with the iron present.
What Can You Do About Iron Overload?
Unfortunately, you can't easily reduce the iron content of your horse's forage or pasture. But there are several practical steps you can take to minimise the impact.
1. Stop Adding Iron to the Diet
Check every feed, balancer, and supplement your horse receives. If any of them contain added iron (often listed as ferrous sulphate, iron oxide, or iron proteinate on the label), consider switching to alternatives that don't. Your horse is almost certainly getting more than enough iron from forage alone.
2. Increase Copper and Zinc Supplementation
The single most effective strategy for managing iron overload is to ensure copper and zinc are supplemented at levels that can overcome iron's competitive blocking effect. Many equine nutritionists recommend:
- Copper at a ratio of roughly 1:3-4 with iron (so if your horse consumes 2,000mg of iron daily, aim for 500-650mg of copper)
- Zinc at approximately 3-4 times the copper level
- Manganese at similar levels to zinc
These are significantly higher than the NRC's baseline requirements, but they're necessary to compensate for iron interference. Organic or chelated forms of these minerals (such as copper lysinate or zinc methionine) may be better absorbed in the presence of high iron, though research in horses is still evolving.
3. Address Water Quality
If your water source is high in iron, consider filtering it or switching to mains water. At minimum, clean water troughs regularly to remove iron sediment.
4. Minimise Soil Ingestion
Manage your pastures to maintain adequate grass coverage. Avoid overgrazing, which forces horses to graze close to the soil surface and increases soil ingestion. In winter, consider feeding hay in nets or raised feeders rather than on muddy ground.
5. Support Liver Health
For horses with suspected chronic iron overload, supporting liver function can be beneficial. Milk thistle (silymarin) has some evidence in other species for supporting liver cells under oxidative stress, though equine-specific research is limited. Consult your vet before adding any herbal supplements.
6. Avoid Iron-Rich Treats and Extras
Molasses-based feeds and licks can be surprisingly high in iron. Similarly, some herbal supplements — particularly those containing nettle or rosehip — contribute additional iron that your horse doesn't need.
The Role of Exercise and Metabolism
Interestingly, there's growing awareness that iron overload may play a role in equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) and insulin dysregulation. In humans, the link between excess iron and type 2 diabetes is well established. While equine research is still catching up, some veterinary researchers have noted that horses with high iron stores seem more prone to metabolic issues.
This is particularly relevant for good doers, native breeds, and horses with laminitis history — groups already at higher metabolic risk. If your horse falls into these categories, paying attention to iron intake becomes even more important.
Common Myths About Iron in Horses
"My horse is anaemic — he needs more iron"
True iron-deficiency anaemia is extremely rare in adult horses. If your horse has been diagnosed with anaemia, the cause is almost always something else — chronic disease, blood loss from parasites, or another underlying condition. Adding iron supplements to an anaemic horse's diet is rarely appropriate and may cause more harm than good.
"Iron supplements will give my horse more energy"
This is a persistent marketing myth. Unless your horse is one of the vanishingly rare cases of genuine iron deficiency, additional iron will not improve energy or performance. It will simply add to the excess your horse is already dealing with.
"Red-coloured soil means high iron"
This is actually partially true. Red or orange-tinted soils do tend to be high in iron oxides. But iron-rich soils aren't always visibly red — clay soils throughout the UK can be high in iron regardless of their colour.
