Their publication, Nutrient Requirements of Horses (most recently updated in 2007), is considered the gold standard reference for equine nutrition worldwide. It compiles decades of peer-reviewed research into a single, comprehensive resource that defines how much energy, protein, vitamins, and minerals horses need based on their age, weight, workload, and physiological status.

In short, the NRC guidelines are the scientific foundation upon which almost every commercial horse feed, supplement, and nutrition plan is built.

Why the NRC Guidelines Matter to You

You don't need to be a scientist to benefit from the NRC guidelines. Here's why they matter to everyday horse owners:

1. They Prevent Nutritional Deficiencies and Toxicities

The NRC doesn't just tell you the minimum amount of a nutrient your horse needs — it also provides upper tolerable limits for many minerals and vitamins. This means you can use the guidelines to avoid both under-feeding and over-supplementing, both of which can cause serious health problems.

That said, individual horses may have higher needs due to genetics, health conditions, or environmental factors. The NRC acknowledges this and provides ranges rather than single fixed numbers for many nutrients.

"My feed bag label tells me everything I need to know"

Feed bag labels are regulated, but they only show guaranteed minimums (or maximums) — not exact values. They also don't account for what the rest of your horse's diet provides. A feed that looks perfectly balanced on the bag might create excesses or deficiencies when combined with your specific forage. You need the full picture.

"The NRC is outdated because it's from 2007"

While a new edition would certainly be welcome, the 2007 NRC remains the most comprehensive, evidence-based resource available for equine nutrition. Newer research has refined our understanding in areas like hindgut health and insulin dysregulation, but the core nutrient requirement data has held up well. Most equine nutritionists still use the 2007 NRC as their primary reference.

"I don't need the NRC — I just feed what works"

Many nutritional problems develop slowly and silently. A horse can look fine on the outside while being chronically deficient in zinc, copper, or vitamin E. By the time you see external signs — poor hoof quality, dull coat, muscle problems — the deficiency may have been present for months. The NRC guidelines help you prevent problems before they start.

NRC Guidelines and Special Situations

Metabolic Horses (PPID, EMS, Insulin Dysregulation)

The NRC was published before the current understanding of equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) and insulin dysregulation was fully developed. While the core mineral and vitamin requirements still apply, metabolic horses often need diets with restricted non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) — something the NRC doesn't specifically address in great detail. Work with a veterinarian or qualified equine nutritionist if your horse has metabolic issues.

Senior Horses

The NRC doesn't have a separate category for senior horses. However, older horses may have reduced digestive efficiency, dental problems, or chronic conditions that increase their nutritional needs. Many senior horses benefit from higher-quality protein sources, increased vitamin C and E, and more easily digestible fibre sources.

Horses in Hot Climates or Heavy Sweating Conditions

The NRC provides estimates for electrolyte losses during exercise, but real-world sweating rates vary enormously. Horses working in hot, humid conditions may need significantly more sodium, chloride, potassium, and magnesium than the standard NRC figures suggest.
